To me, digital photography includes both the "digital darkroom" where I scan
negatives taken with other format cameras up to 4x5 inch in size and the use of
a digital camera to capture on a 'non-film' basis. Use of digital capture
and printing technology represents a natural growth in my exploration of
photography. I
am impressed by how the use of digital technology provides such a high level of
control to the photographer and results in images of high quality and
permanence.
More recently, I have had the opportunity to explore
digital photography in-depth.
I started with an Olympus 5050 and
now use a Canon digital SLR camera with a 50mm macro lens, a 24-85
zoom lens and a 75-300mm IS zoom lens. For scanning negatives, I use an Epson®
3200 scanner to scan both colour and B&W negatives. I use the Epson® 2200
printer with UltraChrome™ inks to produce my digital images
in beautiful and bold colours.
To produce images in black and white, I am using 100% carbon pigment inks on
Innova Archival Soft Textured Art papers. Using seven shades of neutral
carbon pigment provides improved fade-resistance, smoothness and amazing depth for
my black and
white images.
I look forward to using digital technology to produce negatives for
platinum/palladium images and to make pigmented platinum prints -
a process that combines Epson® digital colour prints with platinum/palladium printmaking.
For me, the use of digital technology to scan, manipulate and
produce digital images has become an important tool for artistic expression.
