Silver
gelatin prints contact printed or enlarged from large format negatives
perhaps represent the true craft of photography. Silver gelatin images are printed on Ilford multigrade fiber-based
warmtone paper,
selenium toned and archivally processed for longevity.
Working with Canham 5x7 inch view camera, I contact print the negatives
onto warm tone silver gelatin paper resulting in 5x7 inch prints that carry the
whole and the detail of the scene as captured by the camera and lens. I mainly
use a Nikkor W 210 mm or 8 inch lens which captures a "normal" view as seen on the ground
glass. The 5x7 inch final print size draws the viewer's attention to the image. I
enjoy the 5x7 format with its slightly higher ratio of length to height.
With my Zone VI 4x5 inch view camera, I usually enlarge the image and
produce up to 11x14 inch prints.
This camera is smaller and lighter
than the Canham 5x7.
When using my Zone VI 4x5 inch view camera, I usually use a Rodenstock Apo
Sironar S 150 mm or 6 inch lens which captures the "normal" view as seen on
the ground glass. This camera is a little smaller and lighter than the
5x7 and the view is a more ratio of height to width is less than the 5x7.
For wide angle images, I use a
Nikon Nikkor SW 120mm lens.
One big advantage of view camera lenses is that they can be used interchangeably
between view cameras by mounting on a different lens board.
