In
April and May 2006, I travelled to Scotland to photograph in Argyll and the Southern
Hebrides, Skye and the Western Highlands,
the Northern and Central Highlands and the Orkney Islands.
First stop was on the very quiet
and peaceful Isle of Iona where pilgrims for St. Columba have visited for over
14 centuries (including the Vikings in 794) to photograph the Norman style
architecture at St. Oran's Chapel and Iona Abbey - both built in the
13th century. Next, we journeyed across the Isle of Mull and its many
small Hebridean towns including Tobermory before moving on to Oban. We
journeyed across the Isle of Skye - a rugged island with a beautiful coastline
and many quaint towns and villages like Portree and Stein.
The Orkney Islands are attractively remote with
an unhurried environment. The weather was very windy and cold. Near Stromness, the prehistoric sites at Skara Brae, Ring of Brodgar and the Standing
Stones of Stenness are amazing. In Kirkwall, photographing at St. Magnus
Cathedral, founded in 1137, made the trip worthwhile on its own. We
returned through Inverness and Elgin (and the Whisky Trail) and finally to
Glasgow.
For this
trip, I used my Canon digital equipment and uploaded images daily to my laptop computer.
Without such a superb navigator who made sure we found all the spots safely, the
trip would not have been possible (thanks Suz!).
I was quite happy to use the digital SLR given
the weather conditions - extremely strong winds, rain and cold resulted in some
of the most difficult photographic conditions. However, I was fortunate to
find plenty of photographic opportunities indoors - in the abbeys and cathedrals
- as well as landscapes other open air subjects.
All of the Scotland portfolio images are available to purchase.
Each is digitally printed on Epson Enhanced Matte Paper using
Ultra-Chrome Inks. The price for an 11x14 inch print (approximate) on 13x19
inch paper is
$100.00.

I recommend that the prints be mounted
using acid-free materials, be displayed under glass and out of direct
sunlight. Prints are titled, signed and placed in a
mailing tube for
shipping - all included in the purchase price.
Contact me
by email if you would like
more purchase information.
If you are interested in a guided tour of these areas of
Scotland in
2009 or 2010, please contact me.
Arrangements are being considered for a 7 day photographic tour in 2008 or 2009 based
near Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands. A
group of six to nine individuals is required to make this happen - all camera
formats are welcome.
